Finally calling my entry for The Comicon Challenge 2014 done. Most of my spare time the last month has been devoted to this and while I’m not feeling it right now I know I should be pleased for sticking with it to the end, something I’ve had difficulty with for some time now when it comes to personal projects. External motivation like a competition is quite helpful indeed as I otherwise tend to question my reasons for pursuing things, which seems to be a common thing among creatives. There’s so many ideas and so little time but even if you had all the time it would still be difficult to pick which one to execute first.

Below is the final presentation. If you’d like to see some of the process of creating the character check out the WIP-thread here.

Hey! Looks nice, congraz on finishing the project. It can be hard to stick to a project/image that requires a lot of time and energy over time. Training your patience is also something artists need to do. Not only train your drawing skills, so to speak : ) I must say however, that the glowing lines around the character looks a bit wired to me, it becomes a little bit too much. Like a cake with too much frosting. Frosting is nice, but too much of it and it will take away to focus of the main thing; the cake (or the character in this case). The glue glow just makes me focus more on the holes in his wings than on the character itself. But maybe that’s just me 🙂

Anyhow, good luck! And also, I think the comments problem on my page is fixed now.

Take care!

My thanks. Overcoming the difficulty of finishing projects, something that has become a bigger issue over the last years, was one of the main reasons I joined the competition. I got reminded of how much it helps having an external motivation for making things. To be honest this is not my favorite character I’ve made nor am I entirely sure I went in the right direction, but it didn’t matter, I had to take something to the finish, and in that regard I’m pretty content that I managed to make it.

You got some good points about the presentation. The blue is a bit overpowering. I’ll do some adjustments on the presentation images I made for my portfolio site. You may be right about the green glow although that’s not something I’m going to bother about.

If you feel like you’re working in a vacuum then I recommend joining any challenge. It’s also a good way to get more active in a community.
